Interview with Ray Wilson

His distinctive, lightly hoarse voice is impossible to mistake for anybody else’s. He replaced Phil Collins in Genesis, had a worldwide hit “Inside”, and cooperated with The Scorpions and RPWL. Ray Wilson talks about his music, need for constant changes and move to Poland.

Your music covers a wide spectrum from soft melodic to hard rock. Which kind of music you feel more comfortable with?

RW: Both acoustic and electric and I go through phases, depending on my mood. The key for me is the variety. That’s what keeps touring interesting for me.

You’ve played in many bands: Guaranteed Pure, Stiltskin, Cut_ and solo. Do you find it difficult to settle musically or is it just your restless nature?

RW: No. It’s just the way things turned out. I do like the variety and I like to try new projects out.

All your albums seem to be different in expression, but still characteristic to your own style. Which album are you most proud of?

RW: I’m not sure. They all have something special for me and remind me of different periods in my life.

Which way of performing do you prefer: big rock gigs or small acoustic concerts?

RW: Probably the small acoustic ones. I love the intimacy.

It’s impossible not to mention your contribution to Genesis. How significant to you was the work with Genesis?

RW: Very. It was a good learning experience in writing, touring and in business.

The lyrics on your albums tell a lot about your life. Aren’t you afraid of exposing too much of yourself to public?

RW: Not really. I have no regrets and learned from most of my mistakes

Your latest album is called „Propaganda Man”. What propaganda message are you spreading?

RW: I am talking about the propaganda many of us use in our daily life. It only ever leads to turmoil and distrust and it’s pointless. Most of us are guilty of spinning things for our own selfish reasons and I am trying to get away from that way of living, more and more.

How did you come to take part in recording the song Roses with German band RPWL?

RW: They came to a gig and presented the song to me. It was a great song and beautifully produced, so I did the song with them. Yogi is a very talented writer and producer.

Your connections with Germany seem to be very tight. Why is that?

RW: I have no idea. It just worked out that way.

It’s no secret that you moved from Scotland to Poland. What elements would you transfer from both cultures of Scotland and Polish to each other?

RW: We are very similar and I guess that’s why I’ve settled so quickly here. I just had to change the whisky for the vodka and build a nice life with Gosia. So far I couldn’t ask for more.

Can you imagine yourself staying in Poland for good?

RW: Yes. That’s the plan. I think it’s a good place for our future family to grow up. I will always travel a lot with work though. Gosia too.

How is your Polish progressing since moving to Poznan?

RW: Not good. I know i have to get this together though.

Poles tend to be proud of their cuisine. Which is your favourite Polish dish?

RW: To be honest, it’s not a lot different from what I grew up eating. Just a different name for a lot of the same things. bigos and kotlet schabowy I enjoy, but given I spend most of my time not eating too much, I often eat Thai and Japanese food.

Thank you for choosing Poland and for the interview.
