“There is no true living in a false world” – interview with Yogi Lang from RPWL

You also emphasise the question of the liberating of the spirit; what does freedom mean to you?

Yogi Lang - RPWL, photo Jakub ŻaczkiewiczYL: This is the main point of “Beyond Man And Time”. The liberation of the spirit for me comes through knowledge and being independent, because evolution made us to be self-reflexive beings. You look into a mirror and you see you’re there and this has a certain effect on our social evolution. I think that if the spirit is liberated through knowledge and thinking, this is the future. There are many people trying to stop that. This is exactly what we focus on, not only in “Wanted”, but also as musicians, as in the people we are.

Which RPWL album do you feel the most attached to?

YL: I know it’s a stupid answer, but I really love all the albums. I’ll tell you why: it’s a kind of a diary. It’s very hard for me to say what I did in 1995 or in 1997, so before we had RPWL, but I can tell you exactly what we did in 2002 because we did “Trying to Kiss The Sun” and same thing about 2005 when we did “The World Through My Eyes”.

It’s been four years since you recorded your solo album: “No Decoder”. Do you have any plans to continue your solo career?

YL: I definitely want to. To be honest, Kalle [Wallner] wanted to start with his solo album right in the middle of last year when we planned to do a new album, so he had to wait for a while with his solo work, but I think he will start right after the tour. The same with me, but I’ve got the feeling that Kalle will be the first to start with his solo work. When we played in Berlin, I met Manni Müller, our former drummer who played the guitar on “No Decoder”. We really had a lot of fun recording the album and we will definitely do a second one.

What do you find different between recording with your band and solo albums?

YL: The whole thing about doing the solo albums is just like if you see RPWL as a house and us like a family, then the solo album is just your private room where you can get back and do whatever you want to. This is why the solo album is something very special in its whole appearance. I think it’s the same for Kalle. It’s something that we really enjoy very much.

Is there anything you’d still like to achieve in terms of music?

YL: We’ve achieved really a lot. It came with “The World Through My Eyes”. I treat it as a main album where a lot of things changed. Kalle and me then found a new way of working in the studio that has become our own way of writing albums. We also thought about having a label and our own studio, and we founded our own label in 2010 that still runs. So just at the moment we have our own label, we have our own publishing, we have our own studio, the whole tour is planned. It’s not only a family; it’s a real company. This is something we never dreamt of when we started off as a band, but it’s the thing that we’ve always wanted to achieve. Somehow it’s like a dream when we were young. So this is what we wanted to do in the beginning and this is what we’ve achieved at least. Musically we’re very happy, as we’ve achieved most of the things we ever had in mind.

So, in a nutshell you’re saying: keep dreaming, because dreams come true?

YL: Yeah, exactly!

Thank you so much for you time and good luck!

YL: Thank you!
